“Bharathan created a new sensibility. The solution to the creative drought in Malayalam cinema lies in imbibing the spirit in Bharathan’s art to explore the unknown,” film director Jayaraj said during a programme convened on Tuesday in Thrissur by the Bharathan Foundation to honour the memory of film director Bharathan and actor Bharath Gopi.
Addressing the programme on the 10th death anniversary of director Bharathan, Jayaraj called upon young film directors to imbibe the values propagated by Bharathan. He recalled the contribution of film director Bharathan and actor Bharath Gopi to Malayalam cinema. Playback singer P. Jayachandran sang a commemorative song while journalist M.P. Surendran and producer R. Raju spoke during the occasion.
Various programmes, including an audio programme, scripted by M.P. Surendran and directed by Babu Pisharody and a choreography (based on a song from a Bharathan film by dancer Kripa) were also presented in the commemorative programme which will continue on Wednesday.
An exhibition of paintings will also be held at the Regional Theatre. Dramatist Kavalam Narayana Panicker will deliver the Bharathan memorial lecture to be held at 3 p.m. today. In a Bharath Gopi remembrance meeting at 6 p.m. on the evening on Wednesday, Bharath Gopi will be given an award posthumously for his contribution to Malayalam cinema. His son V.G. Muralikrishnan will receive the award.
Writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair will present the Bharathan Award to film director Bharathi Raja. A programme, led by P. Jayachandran and Vidyadharan, featuring select songs from the films of Bharathan and Gopi, will follow.
