Hansie, a bio-pic of late South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje, who met a tragic end when he died in a plane crash in 2002 after having fallen from grace through a match-fixing scandal in 2000, is all set to release on September 24 in Africa. The film has completed its shooting on Monday.
Directed by Cronje's brother Frans Cronje, Hansie is also slated to have an international release on a later date. The film was shot in South Africa, England and India. South African actor Francois Rautenbach plays Hansie in the movie.
Frans said the film looks at the cricketer's "internal journey from stardom to losing everything and then the journey to rebuilding his life." He decided not to use cricketers as actors as the "movie is primarily a drama".
The film's DVD will feature an exclusive documentary on Hansie and interviews of some of his former teammates, including current India coach Gary Kirsten, Jonty Rhodes, Allan Donald, Shaun Pollock, Peter Pollock, Andrew Hudson and England's newly-appointed captain Kevin Pietersen.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) endorsed and supported the movie after going through its screenplay to ensure that the story is told with integrity.
