Think of a market where you can purchase DVDs of your favourite TV serials! Idea is interesting, right? This is what is exactly going to happen in the near future.

In a bid to explore on such a business opportunity, India's public television broadcaster Doordarshan will soon release one lakh copies of Shyam Benegal’s hugely-popular TV serial 'Bharat Ek Khoj' at a price of Rs. 5,000 for each of 18-VCD/DVD sets containing all the 53 episodes that were telecast.

According to DD Director General Aruna Sharma, though 'Bharat Ek Khoj' is already available in the market, the higher pricing had affected sales. Initially, DVD sets containing about 44 hours of content were priced at Rs. 20,000 each for NTSE and PAL formats and Rs. 13,000 for compressed DVDs.

“A set of 'Bharat Ek Khoj' or any other popular serial at Rs. 5,000 is certainly an attractive proposition. It will be an ideal gift too, apart from finding its way into home collections,” she said. Aruna Sharma also said about 10,000 hours of other popular tele-serials had already been digitised and were being appropriately packaged for sale. She said they had realised the need for affordable pricing to increase the demand.
