Even though latest Mohanlal movie Madambi, directed by B. Unnikrishnan, opened to interesting responses from audiences on Friday last week, film critics pointed out that the basic story of the movie is as old as the hills, and melded from various movies like Balettan, Vesham, Vatsalyam and a few Tamil village movies of Vijaykanth and Sathyaraj!
Some critical reviews said the movie has turned out to be an emotional tear jerker with a contrived and easily predictable climax, despite a reasonably entertaining start in the first half which keeps the audience hooked.
The performances by the secondary cast of actors in the film like Jagathy, Innocent, Siddique, Biju Pappan, Gopakumar, Narayan Nair, K.P.A.C. Lalitha, Sriraman and others are all clichéd since we have seen these characters in many films, critics further added.
Meanwhile, director B. Unnikrishnan said the movie is a soft entertainer with something different for Mohanlal within his image. The movie, in which Mohanlal is paired opposite Kavya Madhavan for the first time, was released by Vaisakha Release in 51 centres across the state.
Mohanlal plays the role of 'Blade' Gopalakrishna Pillai, a kind-hearted money-lender; Kavya Madhavan comes as Jayalakshmi, manager of a newly opened bank. Responses indicated that Kavya Madhavan actually has no role in the story; even a junior artist could do that role quite well. However, more response about the movie is yet to come.
