Thaniye by director Babu Thiruvalla has bagged the Padmarajan award for best debut film director for 2007. The award was announced on Saturday by eminent film-maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, the head of the jury. The award for best director comprises Rs.20,000 and a plaque; the award for best scenarist Rs.10,000 and a plaque.
The award is instituted by the Padmarajan Memorial Trust to perpetuate the memory of P. Padmarajan, who had carved a niche as novelist, short story writer, scenarist and director.
Thaniye depicts the sad plight of the aged and the lonely in today's world, and takes a peep into the lives of home-nurses. The film also makes some strong statements about man's selfishness when it comes to worldly pleasures. Nedumudi Venu delivers a sterling performance as George Kutty with Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, K.P.A.C. Lalitha, Vijay Menon, Ashokan and Mamookya in other cast. Cinematography is by M.J. Radhakrishnan and music by Isaac Thomas Kottukaapally. The script writers are Nedumudi Venu and Babu Thiruvalla.
Judging committee chairman Adoor Gopalakrishnan said Thaniye was chosen for the award for its poignant expression of the fear of isolation and the craving for the love of dear ones. The movie has already won many awards and was screened at many international festivals.
