Days after a large group of directors left MACTA Federation to form a separate organisation (MAMTA), a group of technicians in digital filmmaking have launched Digital Cinema Association (DCA) in Kochi with 380-odd members, a national news paper reported on Thursday.
The aim of the organisation is to unify those who are already associated with digital filmmaking and for those interested in this field, DCA officials said. The DCA will be a conglomeration of 22 unions from technicians to light boys.
The association has an 11-point objective, which includes ensuring better working environment for its members, taking steps, including legal measures, to resolve the complaints raised by its members, helping them secure benefits from the State government, extending financial aid during emergencies, propagating low cost digital technology, giving training in digital technology, production and exhibition of digital films etc.
“Digital filmmaking helps cut the production cost by more than 40 per cent since film rolls are replaced by reusable digital tapes and hard disks,” organisation chairman Mr. Victor said. He said digital films were gaining prominence, as there were about 120 theatres across the State with facilities to download and screen digital films. As the exhibitor can download the film straight from the satellite and the hassles in transporting prints can be avoided, while each print of a normally made film costs Rs. 60,000.
