Director V.K. Prakash, who has directed Punaradhivaasam, Mullavalliyum Thenmaavum, Police and Moonnamathoraal, should be positively complimented for making the clean film Positive, a musical romantic thriller. But the ad-maker-turned-film director's clean effort is not fully supported by the weak script and screenplay of the film. The film could have been even better, if the screenplay was more focused.
V.K. Prakash's film tells the tale of tender alliance of friendship and love, an oft-repeated plot. Positive tells the story of a group of young classmates - Raju, Cherry, Udayan and Winnie - who form a music troupe, which is just an excuse for the foursome to continue meeting even after their studies. Raju (Suraj), a software engineer and keyboard player-cum-singer, is supported in all his activities by the other three - the modern and boisterous Winnie (Vani Kishore), the only girl in the troupe, Udayan (Manikuttan), the drummer with long tresses and beard and Cherry (Ramesh Pisharody).
Winnie's mother plans to get her married to Assistant Commissioner of Police Aniyan (Jayasuriya). Aniyan is not very happy with Winnie mingling with her 'boy' friends. Winnie decides to break off the alliance with Aniyan.
Meanwhile, on his way back from Bangalore by bus, Raju happens to meet a young girl named Jyothi (Ayilya G. Nair), which leads to romantic relationship. Raju plans to introduce Jyothi to his friends and family, but she disappears from her hostel without leaving a trace about her whereabouts, leaving Raju is totally heartbroken. As time goes by, Raju's parents pressurize him to forget her and marry someone else, but he does not relent.
One day, when Raju visits Winnie, he learns that her neigbour has committed suicide and the police team, headed by Assistant Commissioner Aniyan, is investigating the case. He is shocked on learning that the dead man was Jyothi's husband. What happens subsequently forms the rest of the story.
In fact, the story has all vital ingredients like romance, family sentiments, suspense and action to become a major hit. But the script by S.N. Swamy fails to keep the audience engrossed, especially at the climax.
However, the movie has strong technical content and all the key artists have come up with brilliant performances. But Jayasuriya's performance as a police officer is just average. His English dialogues are not up to the mark. Suraj, Manikuttan and Ramesh Pisharody have acted well. The female leads, Ayilya and Vani, have good screen presence and do their parts convincingly.
The film features some very good visuals compared to the director's earlier films. Cinematographer R. Ganesh captures the spirit of youth in all frames. M. Bava's art work and Alex Paul's music do not disappoint us. Of the three songs, 'Kanda naal muthal', sung by Jayachandran, is good and hummable. As far as the film Positive is concerned, the script is the only negative factor.
