Everyone was eagerly waiting for an "original true Balachandra Menon style" in his latest venture De Ingottu Nokkiye, which comes five years after his last film. But the National award-winning director’s earlier films were better. (He received the National Award in 1998 for Samantharangal.) Famous for bringing new talent to the limelight, this time he has introduced a debut heroine, Sarah.
The director, an icon of the eighties, tries his hand at a political satire, but the end result is not gripping. Once the movie ends on the silver screen, De Ingottu Nokkiye ('Look here') makes the audience say 'Engottengilum nokkiye' ('Look anywhere').
The story in a nutshell is about young Vettikkadu Sivan (Jayasurya), who is all set to teach his uncle, Chief Minister Vettikkadu Sadasivan (Jagathy Sreekumar), a lesson. How? By bringing the CM's moronic twin brother Vettikadu Suganan from Gujarat and making him the puppet CM of the state! To carry out this plan, Sivan takes his friends' help, kidnaps the original CM, brings Vettikadu Suganan and puts Suganan in power. Sivan closely assists the puppet CM and incidentally, finds his long-lost sweet heart, Ammu.
As usual, Balachandra Menon makes a cameo appearance in the second half, this time as a police officer, just as he appeared in his earlier movie Ammayanu Sathyam. The story is very similar to half a dozen of his earlier films.
Jagathy Sreekumar has attempted something new with his double role. Jayasurya repeats his usual on screen performances. Debutant heroine Sarah is pretty and promising. Salimkumar, Nedumudi Venu and others in the cast are underutilized.
The plot is below the director's earlier gems, without clarity or consistency, thoroughly predictable. Unlike his earlier films, there are no points to ponder about. This attempt at a black comedy is not as hard-hitting as one would expect.
Cinematography by Jibu Jacob is average; editing by Bhoominathan could have been more focused. M. Jayachandran's songs and Sanjeev Lal's music are okay.
