Mammootty's Annan Thampi, directed by Anwar Rasheed, is a full-fledged comedy entertainer with a routine subject. It is nothing but a modern version of MGR's commercial classic Enga Veetu Pillai and so many other films of similar vein. The entire movie runs on a predictable note, but the way it has been treated turns out to be its plus point. There is enough comedy to appeal to the audience and there is not a dull moment.
This 100% commercial entertainer is definitely not for those looking for too much logic in a film, but for those who want to sit back and enjoy the movie experience. The director gives to his audience a pure masala entertainer.
Annan Thampi tells the story of twins, born within 90 seconds of each other. The problem with them is that one is dumb and the other talks too much! They are at loggerheads with each other since childhood. To avoid more problems and casualties due to sibling rivalry, one is sent to Pollachi with his uncle; other one stays back with his parents. Appu, the elder twin, is a vitriolic troublemaker working against Dharmarajan (Rajan P. Dev). Thenmozhi (Laxmi Rai), niece of Appu's boss, is madly after him.
On the other hand, dumb Achu is the softer twin. He always faces the brunt of others. He and his wife Lekshmy work with his father Ravunni (Janardanan) in recreating the Puranas for their ballet troupe with fellow artists Suraj, Salim Kumar and Harishree Ashokan.
Circumstances created by the villain Govindan (Siddique) masquerading as a friend creates animosity between the brothers. Appu and Achu are after each other's blood and wish to kill each other. But like all masala movies, both brothers unite to take on the villains in the climax.
Suraj Venjaramoodu, Salimkumar and Harisri Asokhan stand out with their comedy. Gopika, among the lady leads, performs well as usual, while Lakshmi Rai provides the right dosage of glamour.
The biggest letdown of the movie is the climax fight, but the overall outcome of the film is so perfect that this can be given overlooked. The presentation is good, which keeps the movie on the right track and pace. Fortunately, the director operates in his usual pleasantly funny style and keeps it from getting out of hand.
Lokanathan behind the camera and Don Max in editing have done a good job in making the movie technically well done. Rahul Raj's songs that are choreographed brilliantly suit the mood of the movie.
